How to rank high in Google maps local results

1.

Google maps is a search feature offered by search giant Google. There are other search engines doing this, like Yahoo, but Google really has the technology dialed in. Think of Google maps as search 2.0.1.What you need to understand first is that ALL search results on maps is displayed in a distinct order.

2.

**First, the display will show all the Google AdSense PPC (Pay Per Click) ads.** These are the ads that are paid for by advertisers to be up there on top. These folks have either paid or are paying for a specific keyword or key phrase to point to them.

3.

**Second, the display will show the Maps local results.**

This is where YOU come in. These are businesses like yours in the same geographic area. To add to the mix, the local results are shown in relation to the center of town.

The closer you are to the center of town, the higher your business will display. Remember, 'location, location, location!'

The results radiate from the town center like spokes of a wheel.

4.

**Third, the display will show the 'generic' search results.**

These are the folks who are listed with Goggle and just show up in results that are relative to yours. By relative, I mean that if you are a DJ business, then all the organic DJs will pop in here at the bottom.

5.

Let's start.

First, you need a Google account. Go sign up and come back. I'll wait here cuz I have nowhere to go.

6.

There you are! I was getting worried there!

OK. Log into your account and look for the 'add new listing' button. Once you hit that button, the system will guide you through the information. All basic stuff like address, business name and so on.

7.

Make sure all the info is correct and click the button marked 'Add your listing'. Now we see the power of technology.

Google is going to verify your identity now. They do this in one of two ways. A phone call or a postcard. I always use the phone call as it is WAY faster.

8.

If you select the phone call, they will call the number you entered in the listing. You can choose to have them call you 1) right now, or 2) in 5 minutes. Select which one you want and Google will display a PIN number. When the call comes in, follow the prompts and enter the PIN. BE SURE YOU DO IT CORRECTLY!

9.

If you select to verify by postcard, it takes three weeks to get done. Imagine all the customers you could find in three weeks!

When the card comes, it will have a blank space for a PIN code. This is the one that you were given when you signed up, so I hope you saved it! Write it in and send the card back to Google.

They will get it, verify it and open your listing. You will be visible immediately.

10.

If you ever need to edit any of the information, you will have to verify your identity each time. This is to ensure you don't get your identity stolen or your listing stolen. This is why I say to do the phone call. It is much faster and easier.

Google's Free Ad Programs

AdSense

AdSense is a free Google web application that lets users run text, graphic or video ads on their blogs or websites. There's no charge for the service, and advertisers are paid when user ad clicks reach a certain number. Targeted ads are based on content keywords. If your blog has an article about training puppies, ads will appear on the top of the page (or any part of the page where you've placed code) based on those keywords. AdSense may also be tailored for mobile content and website search results pages.

AdWords Coupon Codes

Google AdWords are short text messages that appear on the right side of a search page. Interested users click on a link to visit the advertiser's website. Normally, businesses pay an activation fee and owe additional money only when a potential customer clicks an ad. Companies can try out the service for free with a coupon code worth up to $100 in no-cost clicks. Google occasionally mails cards containing these codes to existing users. Web-hosting companies and affiliate marketing sites also offer Google AdWord codes.

Google Grants

Non-profit organizations can take advantage of Google Grants, a free AdWords service designed to help charitable programs attract donors, volunteers and others to their cause. Organizations must apply for the grant on the Google company website and have a 501 (c) (3) status with the Internal Revenue Service. To be considered, organizations must have a generated revenue amount of less than 50 percent. Grant recipients can use from $300 to $10,000 worth of free advertising per month, depending on their needs.

Google Local Business Listings

Create a free business listing using Google Local. By entering basic business information via a Google account, companies can add their address, phone number, business category, payment types accepted and other pertinent details. The listing features Google analytics so the business owner can see how many times the people viewed the page and searched for the company name or other information. The listing appears on Google Maps, showing the prospective customer the exact street location.

Google Ad Policies

Grammar And Spelling

Ads on Google's networks need to be written in logical sentence format, using proper grammar and punctuation. There are some exceptions to this general rule, such as abbreviations, contractions and commonly misspelled words such as txt, pix, and so on. Also, misspellings are allowed if they are used to make a pun, for example a restaurant saying 'This is the plaice for flatfish.' No other spelling or grammar violations are permitted.

Formatting

The title of a Google ad must be no more than 25 characters. Beneath this are two lines that can ad further description of the product of service being advertised. These may be no more than 35 characters. The URL displayed at the bottom of the ad can be longer than 35 characters, but this will be automatically shortened when on-screen. The URL area cannot be used to add more text to the ad, so use the space allotted for the description wisely.

Content

Some content restrictions and regulations apply for Google ads. These are generally what would be expected, for example illegal activities cannot be promoted, ad spam is not allowed, and tobacco or tobacco related products can not be advertised. If you are unsure whether your product or service is eligible for promotion on AdSense, it is advisable to check with Google before putting any money into your AdWords account.

URL

Restrictions apply to the destination page of the ad and the URL displayed on the ad. The landing page must not be under construction, return an error code, or link directly to an email address or a file. The destination URL must also be related to the ad itself. The display URL on the ad has to be related to the URL of the actual website. Usually, just the main URL will be acceptable, but include subdomains too if relevant. For example, mysite.blogspot.com is OK, but blogspot.com is not.

How to Improve ROI With Google Analytics

Track Adsense Ad Clicks

If you have an Adsense account, and Google is displaying ads on your site, you can link Analytics to Adsense and check your Adsense stats in your Analytics reports. Google Analytics can tell you which keywords are bringing the most traffic and what sources and pages it's coming from. When you know what your profitable keywords are, you can maximize their use and get rid of others that aren't working. You might even find that visitors are using keywords you don't have and that you can add these words for an instant traffic boost.

Track Opt-In Offer Responses

Successful businesses know 'the money's in the list,' so one of their primary goals is to build an email list of subscribers and future customers. If you have an opt-in page or form where visitors subscribe to your list to receive a report, newsletter or updates and product discounts, Google Analytics can track your email signups through a URL destination goal you give it. This URL destination should match the Thank-you Page visitors see when they subscribe to your list. Analytics uses this information to find out how many visitors are becoming subscribers, and this feedback will tell you whether you need to change your copy or offer.

Track Affiliate Link Clicks

If you're promoting other people's products on your site for a cut of the profits, you need to know which affiliate links are getting the best response. With this information, you can find out which products are generating the most interest and what link locations are working the best. Analytics has a Javascript one-click event that tracks when visitors click your links. You can tell it to treat each click as a virtual page-view or an event action. Either way, you'll know how your links are doing so you can tweak them for optimal results.

Track Split Testing Results

Conversion rates are the bread and butter of Internet marketing. The best way to improve them is to make ongoing changes to your site's or ad's copy and design. To gauge the reaction of visitors to these changes, Internet marketers use scripts to split test the original (control) against the updated page or ad. These scripts alternate between showing visitors the updated page and the control page. When an updated page or ad gets more sales than the control, it becomes the new control and the test is run again with a newly updated page or ad. Google Analytics' '$ Index' value evaluates the pages you're testing and tells you which one is converting into more sales. It also has custom variables for more detailed test data.
