Yahoo! Equivalent to AdSense

Publisher Network

The Publisher Network was developed as a beta system, and Yahoo! never progressed to a wider adoption of the network before it was discontinued. The network was an invitation-only program that involved Yahoo! reaching out to publishers that it viewed as a good fit for the network. Publishers were paid a percentage of the revenue that Yahoo! earned on the display ads that ran on their websites.

AdSense

Google AdSense helps provide display advertising for websites, matching up ads that are natural fits in terms of theme, content and product with the content of the sites. AdSense pays publishers based on the number of either clicks or impressions that the ads receive on their sites. AdSense is free for publishers to join. AdSense even allows publishers to post ads with their search results and RSS feeds.

Chitika

When Yahoo! ended the Publisher Network, it recommended that the publishers enrolled in the network transfer their accounts to Chitika, an advertising network that syndicated Yahoo! Content Match and Sponsored Search products, allowing for a relatively easy transition, according to media news website Paid Content, a subsidiary of Guardian News and Media Limited. Chitika worked with Yahoo! to develop a process designed for Publisher Network clients to make the move to Chitika. Like Google AdSense, Chitika can arrange for display ads to appear on sites with different users, depending on the search queries that bring the users to each site.

Yahoo! Network Plus

Yahoo! Network Plus is Yahoo!'s online targeted advertising network that places advertising on a group of large sites, such as the various Yahoo! sites and other sites with high traffic numbers. Yahoo! has a variety of agreements with partner sites in Yahoo! Network Plus that provide different options for payment for hosting advertising. Just as the Yahoo! Network Plus works with large content publishers, it also works with large advertisers.

How to Calculate Revenue Per Share

1. Determine the company's revenue. Revenue will be one of the top lines on a company's income statement. For example, a company has revenues of $500,000.

2. Calculate the average number of common shares outstanding during the year. Companies disclose outstanding common shares on their statement of stockholders' equity. For example, at the beginning of the year, the company had 500 shares outstanding, then at the end of the year, the company had 550 shares outstanding. The average share outstanding for the year would be 525 shares.

3. Divide the company's revenue for the year by the average common shares outstanding for the year to determine the revenue per share ratio. In the example, $500,000 divided by 525 common shares is $952.38.

How to Make Money From a Hobby Website

1. Start by creating a website that focuses on your hobby. Maintaining a website can be time-consuming, so start small and add content on a regular basis.

2. Sign up for affiliate programs with merchants that sell products related to your hobby. Writing reviews or allowing your users to add comments is a great way to drive traffic and sell merchandise. This method produces much better results than covering your website with banner ads.

3. Write what you know and invite friends who share your hobby to include content of their own. Users come to an informational website to find answers, thus it's your job to provide solutions, be it tips, how-to information or products and services that you believe work best. Content that answers questions and makes users want to explore more of your site is key to success.

4. Beef up your ability to make money by placing contextual advertising on your website. Several search engines have highly targeted ads and share the revenue with you when your users click on the advertisement. See Resources for Google opportunities.

5. Drive traffic to your website by employing search engine-friendly content. Search engines are how people find your website and you want as many visitors as possible. You can also place advertising on search engines by targeting keywords that match topics of interest related to your hobby website.

6. Expand into broader areas of topic or sites dedicated to a separate hobby or field of knowledge. Once you get the knack of maintaining a website, you can begin to grow your network to make more money.
