Google Adsense Basics

Setting Up

Google AdSense accounts are created at adsense.google.com. When signing up, your primary URL -- your main website -- must be submitted. This does not have to be your own website, and can be one you run through a content management service such as WordPress or Blogger, provided you have access to the website's HTML source code via the content management system. Your website must also be compatible with JavaScript for the ads to be displayed.

Installing Ads

Once signed up and logged in, the AdSense control panel is displayed. From here it is possible to create some ad units. This is done by clicking 'AdSense Setup,' then 'Get Ads.' Different sizes and shapes of ad units can be made from horizontal banners, to vertical skyscrapers, to box or rectangle units. The fonts and colors of Ad units can be customized. Once you set the color, you get HTML source code for the ad. This must be pasted into your website code at the place you want the ad to go.

Tracking

The 'Reports' section of the AdSense admin area lets you know how your ads are doing. At the top you see a quick reminder of how much you've made that day, and then underneath you can make custom reports. 'Page Impressions' tells you how many times the ad has been displayed, 'Clicks' tells you how many people clicked it, 'CTR' is the click through rate (clicks per 100 impressions) and eCPM tells you how much money that ad unit earns per 1,000 page impressions.

Optimization

Once you have gotten the hang of the general interface, know how to set up ads and know how to track the stats of your ads, you can start to optimize your adsense performance. Try setting your ads in different locations, and use different sizes. Try making them stand out, and try making them blend in to your website design. See which gets you the best results after a few tests, then stick to these effective settings.

Burst Network Vs. Burst Direct

Burst Direct

The Burst Direct advertising option is one in which publishers agree to a 90-day, month-to-month agreement to show Burst ads on their sites. The ad campaigns shown on their sites can be based on cost-per-click or cost-per-impression models. After the 90-day term is up, publishers agree to show ads on a month-to-month basis instead of over the long term. This provides flexibility to publishers and to the advertisers in the network who want to create ads.

Burst Network

The Burst Network is another advertising in which advertisers sign up for long-term contracts with Burst to show ads on their sites. For example, a publisher in the Burst Network may agree to a three-year term to show ads. The advantage for publishers is that they get to earn higher revenues from the ads that they show on a per-impression basis. The advantage for Burst is that they get a network of sites that they can count on.

Statistics

When you apply for the Burst Network or Burst Direct and start showing advertisements on your site, you get access to an online control panel that allows you to see your site's statistics. The online panel shows how many times ads have been shown on your site and how many times someone clicked on an ad. You also have the option to control the ads shown on your site, and thereby avoid showing ads that you don't want.

Considerations

When choosing between Burst Direct and the Burst Network, consider the length of the term before you agree to it. In most cases, it makes sense to work with Burst Direct first and see how it goes. If the revenues are strong and you like working with Burst, get into the Burst Network. If you do not think the revenues are as high as they should be, then it does not make sense to sign a multi-year contract with Burst.

How to Make Money Online in Canada

1. Sell items through Amazon.ca. The site is the Canadian version of Amazon.com, and it has all the features of the American Website. Canadians can sell their books, movies and CDs through the site's merchant program. They can also sign up to have their own product listings and sell larger items through the Website like furniture.

2. Sign up with eBay.ca to sell through Canada's own eBay site. The site works just like the U.S. eBay site, but it's geared toward Canadians, and all transactions are in Canadian dollars. If you don't want to sell through the Canadian site, Canadians are eligible to sell through the U.S. eBay site as well. Selling through the American site gives Canadians access to a larger pool of buyers.

3. Use AdSense to make money. AdSense is a Google pay-per-click ad program that Canadians are eligible to join. After signing up for the program through Google, place the AdSense code generated for you on your blog or Website. You will be paid every time someone clicks on one of the ads that were placed by the code. The minimum payout is $100. Some Websites, like HubPages, are open to Canadians and pay a share of AdSense revenues to anyone who writes items for the site.

4. Write for About or Suite101. Both sites accept Canadian writers, and both sites pay Canadians at the same rate that they pay American writers. About.com pays a minimum monthly salary as well as bonuses for readership growth. Suite101 pays on a revenue-sharing basis.

5. Make money through affiliate programs. Most affiliate programs will accept Canadian sellers who place special affiliate links online and then earn money each time someone buys an item by using that link. Canadians can make money with affiliate links that they place on their blogs, on their own Websites and on articles that they publish through article directories.

6. Work through a company that hires at-home Canadians to work online with the company. Accentus hires medical transcriptionists in Canada to work online. Axion Data hires Canadians to do online data entry from home.
