How To Make Money Per Hit on a Website

1. Sign up for a pay-per-hit or 'CPM' ad network. (CPM refers to 'cost per mille,' or the rate you'll receive per 1,000 ad views.) Items to consider include the rate paid per 1,000 views and the minimum income necessary to earn before you'll be paid. Consult the ProBlogger link in the Resources section below for a list of 12 CPM providers that will serve up advertising on your site just like Google Adsense.

2. Decide where you'd like to add CPM advertising on your website. If you already have successful banner ads, affiliate links or pay-per-click ads on your site, you may not to displace them for (generally) lower-paying CPM ads. However, CPM ads can be an easy addition to an established website or a simply way to start advertising on your website from the very first day.

3. Add the CPM provider's html code to your website in the appropriate places in your code. Your ad provider will provide the necessary coding to automatically pull ads from their database onto your site--simply follow their installation instructions to display your new ads in the intended places on your site.

4. Log into your CPM network account periodically to track how your advertising is performing. Of course, the more visitors you have, the more your ads will be viewed, and the greater pay-per-hit income you'll make.

How to Add Ads to My Web Page

1. Make sure your web host will let you put ads on the page. Some free web hosting providers already have their own ads on the page or will not allow you to put Javascript on the page. If you can’t put ads on your existing web page, you will need to switch to another web hosting provider.

2. Join an advertising program. Write down your username and password; you will need them each time you sign in to the program website.

3. Log into the advertising program website and set up your account. Read the support pages to learn how to generate HTML code for ads and to select the types and sizes of ads you want to display on your web page.

4. Generate and copy the HTML code for an ad or ad group. You can copy the code by selecting the code and then choosing “Copy” from the 'Edit' menu of your web browser.

5. Open your web page in an HTML editor. Paste the copied HTML code into your web page at the place you want the ad to appear. You can control the position and appearance of the ads on your web page. Paste in the copied code by selecting “Paste” from the 'Edit' menu of your HTML editor. Save the file when you finish making changes.

6. Upload the web page to your web hosting account. View the page online to make sure the ads appear correctly. If they don’t, revise the HTML code, save the file and upload it again.

What Happens If I Accidentally Click My Google Ads?

Google Policy

Google's general policy on ad clicks is that they should only result from genuine user interest, and that website owners may not click their own ads for any purpose whatsoever. Therefore, even if you yourself are interested in one of the ads that appears on your own site, you may not click it. It is also prohibited to encourage website visitors to click ads, or to use automated means to increase the number of ad clicks you receive.

Click Fraud

Non-genuine ad clicks are classified as click fraud. Were this allowed, it would be possible to target competing businesses and repeatedly click their ads, increasing their advertising costs to no benefit. Furthermore, it would be possible to cost advertisers to your own site money by clicking your own ads, even if you had no interest in the product. Automated click fraud is a felony in some states, such as California under penal code 502.

Accidental Clicks

Google understand that users will accidentally click their own ads on occasion, and for a single case will generally not take any action against the user. However, since the usage of AdSense is closely monitored, if the click is recognized as coming from the ad owner, the income will be stripped from it -- though the click may still appear on the AdSense statistics pages. If a publisher is deemed to have clicked ads purposefully, however, the account may be disabled.

AdSense Preview Tool

Some instances of publishers clicking their own ads occur because the site owner is genuinely interested in a product or service being advertised, or because they are curious about the advertisers they are attracting. For this purpose, Google AdSense Preview Tool can be used to click ads without them being counted in the main statistics or costing anything to the advertiser. It can also be used to view the ads that would appear on a page you are thinking of adding AdSense to.
